Noelle wasn’t sure what her uncle meant, but she feared he would use the gun. David laced his fingers through hers, his touch filling her with hope and comfort. They would get through this together. They had to because she didn’t want to lose this man now that she’d found him. She would investigate her strong feelings for a near-stranger later, but for now, she prayed with all her might they would survive.

“Life’s all about choices, isn’t it?” A tall black man stepped into the room flanked by two men stuffed into too-tight suits, the outline of holstered weapons clearly visible under their jackets. He pointed a finger at Adam, who clutched his gun. “I’d put that weapon on the table unless you want one of my associates to do it for you.”

Adam’s mouth firmed but he complied with the request. The leader of the newly arrived trio nodded at one of them, who scooped up the gun, tucking it into his waistband.

Noelle studied the leader. While the dreadlocks were gone in favor of close-cropped hair now dotted with silver, she recognized the unidentified man in the video and photos her father had taken as Isaiah Hampel.

“This is a private family matter,” Mr. Claperston snapped, clearly expecting his words to send the other men packing.

“You’re Isaiah Hampel.” Noelle’s statement drew his attention to her. A smile creased his face, but it didn’t reach his eyes. She shuddered despite her intention to play it cool.

“You must be Tyrone’s daughter. You have his directness about you.” He nodded as if confirming his words.

“The sheriff’s office has the tapes and photos of you and Jamal,” David said.

“So I heard. I think the DEA will be calling them very soon to clear up the matter.” His relaxed attitude didn’t surprise Noelle. He would have to be extremely confident to live a double life, one of an upstanding citizen and one of a drug lord. Then his words penetrated her mind.

“DEA? Why would they be calling the sheriff’s office?” Her question seemed to amuse Hampel because he barked a laugh.

“I guess it wouldn’t hurt to let you know the truth after all these years. My part in that little drama has been long over.”

When she didn’t respond, he shrugged. “Because it was a sting operation set up by your father to entrap Jamal Aaron. Worked like a charm.”

“Then you weren’t a drug dealer?”

Hampel raised his eyebrows. “Stereotype much, do you? Because I’m a black man, I must be a drug dealer?”

She winced at his sarcasm but pressed on. “I saw the videotapes with you making drug deals with Jamal.”

“Then I should have been nominated for an Academy Award for my performance.” Hampel swept his hand over the room. “But that’s not why I’m here. I heard there’s been some ruckus over this house, people creeping in and out at all hours of the day and night.”

“So you came to check it out? With your bodyguards?” The sneer in Adam’s voice dripped in the air like vinegar running down the sides of a bowl.
